Taipei, Taiwan, October 4, 2005 According to Issue 932 of Business Weekly,
System General (SG) is ranked 13th in Taiwan's semiconductor industry in terms of
its Essential Technology Strength of Patents, and 58th in Taiwan's top 100 patent
winners.
In view of the growing importance of patent intellectual property rights to businesses'
global competitiveness, Business Weekly a well-known Taiwan business
magazine in the cover story of its latest issue titled 15 New Taiwan Kings introduces
several Taiwan businesses that have gained a global competitive edge through their
patent advantages. In addition, the magazine ranks Taiwan businesses according to
their patent capabilities. According to Business Weekly, the ranking is prepared with a
reference to the 2004 database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office
(USPTO). The 100 Taiwan businesses that won the highest numbers of patents were
selected and dubbed The Top 100 Patent Winners. The 100 businesses are ranked
further after being divided into 15 industries and one legal person. Essential Patent
Index (EPI) and Current Impact Index (CII) are used to demonstrate individual
businesses' patent superiority. Essential Technology Strength (ETS) is then used to
show the combined scores of quality and quantity.
SG in 2004 obtained 12 US patents, ranked 58th among the top 100 in terms of the
number of patents obtained. Nine out of the 12 patents obtained were invention
patents. A computation combining the EPI and CII used by Business Weekly gives SG
an ETS of 18.61, ranked 13th in the nation's semiconductor industry.
President Tom Yang a fervent
advocate of technical innovations says, "We are glad that our efforts in
innovations and inventions have received recognition. We are not going to be
contented. In the field of IC design, patent intellectual property rights are
the foundation of survival. For the interests of customers and future
development of the company, we will invest more efforts. I believe our ranking
will rise by the year if similar rankings are to be prepared in future."
Since the beginning of the year, SG
has so far obtained 15 US patents with 9 of them having been given patent
numbers and announced, and the remaining 6 waiting to receive the certificate.
